„The Original in Darmstadt, Germany“Oldest presered tavern in Darmstadt, Germany!
The interior alone makes a gem out of this restaurant which already has a long history. In 1580 the „Bockshaut“ was founded as a presbytery and from 1760 on was used as a tannery. In 1795 it was transformed into a wine tavern and restaurant and the emblem of the guild, the skin of a male goat (Bockshaut) was chosen as the name for this tavern. The Bockshaut is the only restaurant in the State of Hessen to receive the „Historical German Hostelry Prize“ from the German gouvernment.
For the German government, it is an absolute necessity to preserve original and traditional hostelries. They play a social role, as well as a cultural role and can be linked to the history of Darmstadt and Germany. The prize will be awarded to Reiner Heiss, owner of the Bockshaut, in a public award ceremony in spring 2010.
