The history of Bockshaut
1580 built as a presbytery beside the city church.
From this time you find the original basement vault. Under the ground you can find the rest of the city wall.
In this time dominate landgrave Georg I at Darmstadt.
1760 Johann Georg Gervinus becomes the new owner.
Family Gervinus rebuild the house into a tannery. The guild symbol – an skin of steinbock ( ibex) the german name fpor this are BOCKSHAUT –now it is the name.
At this stage the building stood directly at the city wall.
1795 beside the tannery begin the selling of wine
This time the tradition of the hostelry Bockshaut, sarted, bevor 200 years.
A famouse son of the family is born 1805 Georg Gottfried Gervinus
Later he ist one of the famouse "Sieben Göttinger Professoren" and one of the speaker at the Frankfurter Parliament 1848/1849.
The convention at the Paulschurch Frankfurt is the beginning of the German Democratic Constitution.
1843 the hostelry Bockshaut will buy by Georg Habich.
The famouse son of the familiy will born 1872 Ludwig Habich.
He is the only Darmstädter performer who build at the Künstlerkolonie. Between 1900 and 1906 he made the colourful figures of Man and Wife and the Ernst-Ludwig-House at the entree of the Mathildenhöhe.
1918 the landlord Friedrich Heiß buy the hostelry BOCKSHAUT with his wife Sofie.
He descended from a 300 years old landlord family in Augsburg. The family hostelry are „Hotel 3 König“ and „Ratskeller zu Augsburg“.
After the world war the hostelry are from december 1944 to 1948 in the basement vault and after 5 years from 1948 the building completed.
Now the hostelry Bockshaut to be comprided of the old building, the old police station from Darmstadt and a bank.
Today the Bockshaut is the oldest hostelry in town
1989 Reiner Heiß takes over the family business.
